Families can explore the works of Beatrix Potter and the spectacular countryside surroundings that inspired her beloved stories, and couples can enjoy romantic lakeside dinners in wonderfully elegant restaurants.

While away the hours by the shores of Lake Windermere, or enjoy boat trips for a different view of the breathtaking Cumbrian scenery.

Windermere is known for its challenging hills, and its woodland trails. It’s easy to find your way around, even if you make your way away from the town centre to the narrow alleys that make up the town’s residential areas. A climb to the top of one of the steepest slopes will reward you with breathtaking views of the lake whilst quieter woodland walks present the perfect opportunity to view birds, mammals, insects, interesting plants and flowers.

A visit to Windermere can be as relaxing or as active as you’d like it to be. Various companies offer a wealth of opportunities to try outdoor activities ranging from hiking to rock-climbing, and the Treetop Trek has quickly become one of the best Windermere attractions for adventurers of all ages.

A much calmer holiday might involve boat hire, dinners at traditional inns and drinks al fresco at one of the town’s continental-style bars.

The Windermere Hotel is a romantic hotel set high above the town, and was known as The Riggs when it first opened in 1847. It’s there that you can enjoy classic comfort, with a walk downhill taking you to souvenir shops and antique stores, and to other attractions including the World of Beatrix Potter and the Graythwaite Hall Gardens.

Before your journey home, don’t forget to visit the flagship Lakeland store where you can buy a wide range of kitchenware including quirky contemporary utensils and kitchenware gifts as a reminder of your visit to the Lake District National Park.
