You can stay on dry land, or head out to sea enjoying a boat trip to nearby Steep Holm, a privately-owned island with an abundance of wildlife and amazing panoramic views.

The seafront is lined with iconic buildings, including The Grand Atlantic Hotel, while further inland you’ll find attractions including the Winter Gardens Pavilion and The Playhouse Theatre, which is particularly popular for its high-quality pantomimes throughout the festive season.

Weston-super-Mare offers plenty to enjoy whatever the weather, with an unforgettable November carnival taking place annually, featuring over 140 brightly-lit floats, music and a colourful procession. The town boasts an abundance of shops, ranging from novelty beach wares to shopping centres full of chain retail outlets – perfect for a rainy day. And, during the summer months, the town welcomes thousands keen to lay their beach towels on the sandy beaches, or take advantage of the abundance of ice cream parlours and alfresco cafés on the Royal Parade.

The beaches of Weston-super-Mare host events throughout the year, including motorbike and music festivals. Many of these are free to attend, so be sure to find out what’s on offer before you travel.

One of the most iconic attractions in Weston-super-Mare is the Grand Pier, stretching 400m out to sea and offering an abundance of traditional cafés, amusements and leisure facilities for all ages. Just south of the pier is the SeaQuarium, a fantastic aquarium which is home to a variety of rare marine animals, as well as an interactive experience for curious kids.

Few places are so suited to families with children, and to couples looking for that traditional British seaside holiday atmosphere, as Weston-super-Mare. Meanwhile, just a little further afield, you’ll find some of England’s best showcaves, and cities like Bristol and Bath, with their own modern and historic attractions to offer.

The Grand Pier

With everything from world-class rides and attractions to dinner dances, Edwardian-style tea rooms, and special evening dance nights, there is something for the whole family at Weston-super-Mare’s beautiful Grand Pier. Recently awarded the Visit England Quality Rose Award, the pier offers a variety of cafés, restaurants, tea rooms, and ice cream parlours, and plays host to regular events, including a cider and gin festival, music concerts, and special dance and entertainment events the whole family will enjoy.

The West Somerset Railway

Much more than just a railway, this country branch line of the old Great Western Railway takes you through scenic countryside on a nostalgic ride back in time. Ten stations are connected by a 20-mile scenic journey, transporting you through the beautiful Somerset countryside. The railway also hosts a range of special events and experiences for its passengers, including afternoon teas, fish and chip suppers, murder mystery journeys, and more.

Clevedon Court

A National Trust property, Clevedon Court is a 14th-century manor house surrounded by exquisite 18th-century landscaped gardens.

On display, you’ll see Nailsea glass and beautiful Elton ware pottery, as well as beautiful furnishings that hark back to yesteryear. Clevedon Court has long been the home of the Elton family, who have made several modifications over time, though the building’s original Elizabethan style and structure remain perfectly preserved for visitors to enjoy.

Hestercombe Gardens

The beautiful Hestercombe Gardens cover a total of 50 acres, and have evolved over time to feature garden designs from the past three centuries.

As you walk through the gardens, you’ll see cascading waterfalls, calm lakes, tranquil woodland paths and formal flowerbeds, as well as lovely temples with intricate designs and spectacular countryside views. In amongst the gardens, you’ll find a children’s play area, a restaurant, a restored 17th-century watermill, and a garden centre and plant shop. View the impressive Hestercombe House or an ever-changing art gallery, or visit at Christmas to see the gardens as a magical winter wonderland.

Jasmine Cottage

Jasmine Cottage is a privately-owned RHS Partner Garden, whose beautiful blooms, flora and foliage change with the seasons.

The garden’s owners carry out maintenance and alterations, and take great pride in the variety of plants and flowers on display. Listed in the Good Gardens Guide, Jasmine Cottage offers open days throughout the summer months, from May until August.

The Bishop's Palace and Gardens

Located in the lovely Somerset town of Wells, this historic house is a medieval palace set in 14 acres of land.

The freshwater springs that inspired the town’s name can be found within the gardens. Throughout the year, various events are hosted at the palace, including medieval re-enactments and bird of prey displays. The Bishop’s swans are resident mute swans, famous because they ring a bell whenever they want food and will often take organised walks down the street to a local pond. It’s worth visiting just to see them.

The Playhouse

Situated in the heart of Weston-super-Mare, this 664-seat theatre offers a welcoming and friendly atmosphere, and a year-round programme of theatrical shows, performances and special events.

There are around 300 performances throughout the year, with a mix of professional and community events, including pantomimes, children’s shows, musicals, comedy, drama and dance.
