Visit Dorset

There's Plenty to See and Do

There’s something special about Dorset. It could be the county’s rich and interesting past, its natural landmarks including Durdle Door or its pristine beaches and sea front arcades. Whatever the attraction, Dorset tempts more than 4 million visitors every year from the UK and overseas.

Tourists aren’t a new thing. In fact, over the years Dorset’s expansive fields and coastal features have attracted and inspired some of the UK’s greatest writers. Many of the adventures in Enid Blyton’s beloved stories took place along the Dorset coast, and Dorset is often now known as ‘Hardy Country’ thanks to Thomas Hardy who based the fictional Wessex on the region. Stories like Tess of the D’Urbervilles were based in Wessex, whilst Jane Austen wrote Persuasion on a visit to Lyme Regis.

Dorset is still an inspiration to this day. The popular Broadchurch TV series has been described by its writer as ‘a love letter to the scenery of the Jurassic Coast’, and locations including West Bay, the Harbour Cliffs Beach and the Jurassic Pier were used during filming.

Yet, even with so much natural beauty, the county has even more to attract its many visitors. Attractions like Corfe Castle, the Dinosaur Museum and the Adventure Wonderland theme park will spark the imagination of any child, and the whole family will love days out at the Kingston Maurward Gardens and Animal Park, Farmer Palmers or the English Heritage attraction of Portland Castle. Dorset’s Splashdown Water Park awaits thrill-seekers, and the mysteriously peaceful Blue Pool is amongst England’s best places to enjoy a quiet afternoon tea. Every day brings something new, and Dorset has something for everyone.

Enjoy unforgettable sea views from Bournemouth’s Savoy Hotel, but don’t forget to get out there and experience everything else that Dorset has to offer. The county enjoys warm summers and an above-average level of sunshine, though there are things to do even on the most relentless of rainy days.
