The west coast of Scotland is said to be the most jagged and dramatic in the UK. That’s quite a reputation! But when you visit you’ll see that it’s a reputation that’s thoroughly deserved. Let’s just say you won’t want to leave your camera at home. Dozens of tiny islands and islets just off the mainland create stunning coastal vistas. And you might not have thought it, but some of the white-sanded beaches here are astonishing too. But there’s much more to explore. Where to begin?
How about with a wee dram? You are in Scotland, after all. The Bladnoch Distillery is the southernmost distillery in the whole of Scotland and is just a short journey inland from our hotel in Portpatrick. You can take a tour of the distillery where you’ll get to see how their whisky is made and breathe in the heady vapours of maturing whisky in the warehouses. Best of all, you’ll get to sample the goods at the end of the tour. Auchentoshan is another lowland single malt that comes highly recommended.
If you like the idea of real escape then be sure to visit the Mull Of Galloway. It’s Scotland’s most southerly point and is a desolate, beautiful coastal wilderness of peace and tranquillity. Or for something more adventurous, reconnect with your inner explorer and take a daytrip over to Belfast where you can walk the Giant’s Causeway and take a tour of the city. It’s just a short boat ride away.
