A warm welcome to The Pitlochry Hydro Hotel...

Situated just outside, Pitlochry, with great views over the town which is close enough to walk to, the building has been a hotel since it opened in 1890. The name ‘hydro’ refers to the fact that the water in the surrounding area were found to be rich in hydrogen and beneficial to health. We have a lovely restaurant and bar area and a popular gym, swimming pool and sauna to unwind in.

Pitlochry is superb for walkers. Ben Vrackie Mountain towers above the town, and the Cairngorm Massif is close by, to the North. Loch Tummel and Loch Rannoch are also easily explored using the hotel as a base. Our location is perfect for all sorts of holidays, visiting gardens, taking in the history of the area or simply coming to relax.

The scenery is spectacular and Pitlochry is a charming town - the perfect base from which to explore the Perthshire Highlands. A real favourite is visiting The Edradour, the smallest whisky distillery in Scotland. For the keen golfer there are two excellent golf courses close by.

Local Insight

After over 10 years here, I think I am well qualified to know the hotel and the area and why people come to stay with us. The surrounding scenery is spectacular and Pitlochry itself is a charming town. It’s the perfect base from which to explore the Perthshire Highlands.

My personal favourite is visiting our superb Scottish whisky distilleries. Just four miles from us is the Edradour Distillery, the smallest one in Scotland. If you are more sports minded, we also have two excellent golf courses close by.

  • Drummond Gardens
Drummond has all the characteristics of a courtly, 17th century Scottish Renaissance garden. It is a composite garden, restructured in early Victorian times and renewed again in the 20th century when the garden framework and the exceptional interest of the original 19th century design were carefully preserved.

  • Scone palace Gardens
Whilst the gardens and grounds are beautiful throughout the year, there are a number of seasonal highlights. Spring is heralded by the arrival of snowdrops followed by the drifts of daffodils throughout the grounds. The primulas and bluebells bloom in the woodland areas throughout April and May. In May and June the grounds explode with colour from the rhododendrons and azaleas, while the Laburnum Walkway will also dazzle you with its distinctive bright yellow flowers.

  • Blair Castle
Diana’s Grove is a fine planting of tall trees, originally laid out in 1737. Hercules Garden was also designed in the mid 18th century forming a walled garden of some nine acres which has recently been restored. The historic ruins of St Bride’s Kirk stand on raised ground beyond Diana’s Grove.

  • Cluny House Gardens
There are two very impressive specimens of Sequioadendron Giganteum the Wellingtonia or Big Tree, growing at Cluny. One of these is a champion tree standing at about 33.5m (110 feet) and has an enormous girth of 11m (36 feet), the widest for a UK conifer. There were two introductions from California of S. giganteum into Britain in 1853. One of these was by John Matthew, a Perthshire botanist, who sent seeds back to his father in Gourdiehall, Perthshire. The oldest trees in Scotland are considered to have been derived from this collection and although it is not known for certain, it is very possible that the Cluny trees also originate from this seed. Visitors can be quite overwhelmed by the massive grandeur of the two Cluny Sequoiadendrons which dominate the garden and the surrounding landscape.

Etape Caledonia Weekend

Excellent to be allowed to store bikes in the room - top class! Generally staff helpful/friendly bar one at reception who was quite rude on more than one occasion. Dining was unsettling with so many staff loitering around the tables whisking plates from under you and rushing you to your next course - very unrelaxing. Food was very average. Room bit shabby with peeling paint in bathroom and rather grubby. Whole place needs a bit overhaul and dragged into the 21st century.

Wedding Anniversary

We came with our friends (their first Shearing trip) to celebrate our Golden Wedding Anniversary and their 45th, we had stayed at the Hydro last August for a short break and really enjoyed it, so we booked again and we weren’t disappointed, everything about the break was superb, hotel, staff, food, even the weather. Thanks to all for an excellent break - I am sure we will be back again before too long. Pam and Alan Bradley and Val and John Mills.

Short Break

We nearly cancelled this break after finding out that Coast and Country were a part of Shearings but glad we did not. This hotel is far better than our experiences with Shearings in Oban. The Hydro is in a beautiful setting with ample parking and good facilities. The evening set meals are good without being great but the breakfasts are terrific. We upgraded to a Superior room which was large, clean and well appointed. I hope the Hotel Manager appreciates his main asset, the Staff.

Pitlochry Hotel 28th Jan to 1st Feb 2013

My husband and I have been to other Coast and Country Hotels in Scotland and agree that this hotel was the best in our experience. Our rooms which were 10, 12, and 14 were very adequate with a very comfortable bed, excellent facilities for making a drink. Bathroom large and shower good. Very quiet at night and we slept very well, cold on arrival but soon warmed up. Dining room Manager Frank and his staff who served us on table 21 (mother and daughter) were exceptional helpful and polite and catered to our every need without fuss. The meals were very good and the variety was excellent and plenty of it. The bar staff were also very helpful, in fact the whole staff under the guidance of the Manager Mr Chris Stanton were a credit to the Hotel. Our driver Geoff (called us all cherubs not pensioner was a very considerate driver and very informative and amusing and helped make our holiday very interesting. We will definitely return because the staff made it an enjoyable experience for all of us and not just a job to them. Thank you once again Vera Galloway.

Grand Looking Hotel

The approach and facade were magnificent, and the location wonderful. Reception, dining, bar -entertainment areas were as impressive. Our room was disappointing. It looked tired and in need of updating especially the bathroom. The leisure facilities were also cause for concern and may have some health and safety issues. The food was fair for the deal we booked. The staff were friendly helpful and approachable with the exception of one curt young lady at reception. Will return one day.

One of the best hotels

My partner and I really enjoyed our stay in this hotel, I am disabled, there was a lift to all floors, bar and lounge was ok for disabled, the staff in the restaurant were very help full making sure I had the perfect seating, the service was excellent and no waiting time for your meals to be served, as was the breakfast, staff are very pleasant, attentive to detail and smartly dressed, well worth the price, we will be back to this hotel.

Will be back next year

Just arrived home today and what can I say...lovely room, great food, staff are friendly and perfect location within easy walking distance to the main town. The pool is great, Jacuzzi is lovely. Me and my husband were one of the only few younger couples to stay at the hotel but it didn't matter because we just went out to Pitlochry at nights, perfect break, feel truly refreshed, can't wait to go back next year :)

3 Day Break

Booked 3 days stayed 2!! Was here last year. This year in room 4 (ground Floor) too noisy and bathroom floor was dirty. Food was not as good as last year, unfortunately. Dining staff very obliging and courteous. Decided to leave on the Sunday partly due to weather. On returning keys to reception was met with a dismissive attitude and was never asked what were the reasons for early departure. This receptionist could have made an effort and not wear a t-shirt in reception. Unprofessional!

Perfect getaway

Splendid hotel in picturesque surroundings you would be hard pressed to find a better setting for a short break. The staff are a credit to the hotel, very welcoming and friendly - nothing is too much trouble. Service team exceed expectations, reception are friendly and knowledgeable, even the manager is visible and accessible. The rooms are clean and comfortable & the views spectacular. Plenty of choice in food of an excellent standard and quality - simply cannot fault them - looking forward to next trip.

Weekend Away :)

I would definitely recommend the spa facilities and the hotel accommodation as it was very welcoming and pleasant. However the food and the communication between staff and customers was abysmal. The food orders were not listened to, and as a result, we were giving the wrong food and cancelled the reservations the following night. However the hotel itself is a lovely place and if the food standard and the staff communication issues were resolved I would be more than happy to return.

We stayed at the hydro hotel with our two grandchildren aged 13 and 8. They loved the swimming pool. Rooms were excellent, lovely and clean and towels changed every day. The service in the restaurant was great and one of the waiters Michael done a great job as did all of the others. We will be returning another time. We have recommended this hotel to other people.

Delayed Thanks

We returned on Monday 24th January from our 3 night break at the Pitlochry Hydro Hotel. This has long been one of our favourite hotels for its position, comfort and pool and once again we were not disappointed. Given the price we were charge, our break must have been “bargain of the year”! The staff were pleasant and attentive when need and in January, we were very glad of the two efficient heaters in our room – well done and thank you to everyone!

Our Stay

The restaurant, food and lounge areas were excellent although some of the bedrooms were very "tired" and need of redecoration. Attention needs to be taken by housekeeping and there was dust in our bathroom shower curtain rail and around the cistern all the time we were there (Room 102). The Restaurant Manager was excellent and was always very attentive. Food standard was very good and there was a good choice. Apart from bedroom, I would recommend this hotel and would return again.
