A warm welcome to The Pitlochry Hydro Hotel...

Situated just outside, Pitlochry, with great views over the town which is close enough to walk to, the building has been a hotel since it opened in 1890. The name ‘hydro’ refers to the fact that the water in the surrounding area were found to be rich in hydrogen and beneficial to health. We have a lovely restaurant and bar area and a popular gym, swimming pool and sauna to unwind in.

Pitlochry is superb for walkers. Ben Vrackie Mountain towers above the town, and the Cairngorm Massif is close by, to the North. Loch Tummel and Loch Rannoch are also easily explored using the hotel as a base. Our location is perfect for all sorts of holidays, visiting gardens, taking in the history of the area or simply coming to relax.

The scenery is spectacular and Pitlochry is a charming town - the perfect base from which to explore the Perthshire Highlands. A real favourite is visiting The Edradour, the smallest whisky distillery in Scotland. For the keen golfer there are two excellent golf courses close by.

Local Insight

After over 10 years here, I think I am well qualified to know the hotel and the area and why people come to stay with us. The surrounding scenery is spectacular and Pitlochry itself is a charming town. It’s the perfect base from which to explore the Perthshire Highlands.

My personal favourite is visiting our superb Scottish whisky distilleries. Just four miles from us is the Edradour Distillery, the smallest one in Scotland. If you are more sports minded, we also have two excellent golf courses close by.

  • Drummond Gardens
Drummond has all the characteristics of a courtly, 17th century Scottish Renaissance garden. It is a composite garden, restructured in early Victorian times and renewed again in the 20th century when the garden framework and the exceptional interest of the original 19th century design were carefully preserved.

  • Scone palace Gardens
Whilst the gardens and grounds are beautiful throughout the year, there are a number of seasonal highlights. Spring is heralded by the arrival of snowdrops followed by the drifts of daffodils throughout the grounds. The primulas and bluebells bloom in the woodland areas throughout April and May. In May and June the grounds explode with colour from the rhododendrons and azaleas, while the Laburnum Walkway will also dazzle you with its distinctive bright yellow flowers.

  • Blair Castle
Diana’s Grove is a fine planting of tall trees, originally laid out in 1737. Hercules Garden was also designed in the mid 18th century forming a walled garden of some nine acres which has recently been restored. The historic ruins of St Bride’s Kirk stand on raised ground beyond Diana’s Grove.

  • Cluny House Gardens
There are two very impressive specimens of Sequioadendron Giganteum the Wellingtonia or Big Tree, growing at Cluny. One of these is a champion tree standing at about 33.5m (110 feet) and has an enormous girth of 11m (36 feet), the widest for a UK conifer. There were two introductions from California of S. giganteum into Britain in 1853. One of these was by John Matthew, a Perthshire botanist, who sent seeds back to his father in Gourdiehall, Perthshire. The oldest trees in Scotland are considered to have been derived from this collection and although it is not known for certain, it is very possible that the Cluny trees also originate from this seed. Visitors can be quite overwhelmed by the massive grandeur of the two Cluny Sequoiadendrons which dominate the garden and the surrounding landscape.

Our Stay

The restaurant, food and lounge areas were excellent although some of the bedrooms were very "tired" and need of redecoration. Attention needs to be taken by housekeeping and there was dust in our bathroom shower curtain rail and around the cistern all the time we were there (Room 102). The Restaurant Manager was excellent and was always very attentive. Food standard was very good and there was a good choice. Apart from bedroom, I would recommend this hotel and would return again.

Review of our stay

Just returned from Pitlochry and must say what an enjoyable stay we had. The Hydro is a wonderful place to stay and all the staff were extremely pleasant. The food was excellent and plentiful and our bedroom was light, spacious, comfortable and very clean although we did pay a little extra for a Superior room. We will certainly be going back!

Delayed Thanks

We returned on Monday 24th January from our 3 night break at the Pitlochry Hydro Hotel. This has long been one of our favourite hotels for its position, comfort and pool and once again we were not disappointed. Given the price we were charge, our break must have been “bargain of the year”! The staff were pleasant and attentive when need and in January, we were very glad of the two efficient heaters in our room – well done and thank you to everyone!

Fantastic Food and Service

The hotel lounge and dining room had been refurbished since last visit and looked very elegant. The dining was well organised with immaculate and attentive staff and the food was first class. I would definitely recommend it to friends.

3 Day Stay

We stayed at the hydro hotel with our two grandchildren aged 13 and 8. They loved the swimming pool. Rooms were excellent, lovely and clean and towels changed every day. The service in the restaurant was great and one of the waiters Michael done a great job as did all of the others. We will be returning another time. We have recommended this hotel to other people.

Weekend Away :)

I would definitely recommend the spa facilities and the hotel accommodation as it was very welcoming and pleasant. However the food and the communication between staff and customers was abysmal. The food orders were not listened to, and as a result, we were giving the wrong food and cancelled the reservations the following night. However the hotel itself is a lovely place and if the food standard and the staff communication issues were resolved I would be more than happy to return.
