Local Attractions

Northumbria is a haven for those who enjoy both the great outdoors and some of the finest heritage sites in England. In addition, the bustling energy and commerce of Newcastle is just 40 minutes away by car.

Chollerford is situated at England’s narrowest point, making the beautiful, rugged coastlines of both East and West accessible within an hour’s drive.

Hadrian's Wall

Hadrian's Wall, a World Heritage site, is within easy access of The George Hotel. Walk along the great barrier erected by the Romans against the marauding Scottish tribes. The George Hotel is conveniently located near to several popular stretches of Hadrian’s Wall including Cawfield’s Roman Wall and Chester Bridge Abutment.

Chesters Walled Garden

This 2 acre 18th Century walled garden lies next to Chesters Roman Fort and Hadrian's Wall. The gardens feature one of the largest collections of herbs in England and include a Roman herb garden. There are hundred-year-old espalier apple trees, a delightful knot garden, ornamental ponds, old fashioned roses and flower filled borders. Organically run, it is a paradise for gardeners, bird watchers and artists. This attraction is located less than one mile from the George Hotel in Chollerford, and six miles north of Hexham.

Chollerford Bridge

This old stone bridge replaces the original medieval structure which was damaged in a flood back in 1771. Constructed eight years after the Jacobite rebellion of 1745, the bridge was built to allow troops to cross the river when travelling between Newcastle and Carlisle. The George Hotel is situated on the west side of the bridge.

Please note: Some of the local attractions listed above may be seasonal and guests are advised to check opening hours prior to their visit.
