A warm welcome to The Derwentwater Hotel...

We appeal to guests looking for a relaxing break, away from it all, or wishing to enjoy sightseeing around the Lakes. From the hotel’s conservatory you can stroll down the path to the lake, taking in the fresh air and beautiful scenery. Rooms with fantastic views across the lake are available for guests wishing to wake up and start the day with a smile on their face. If you’re an animal lover, there is plenty to see in the extensive grounds of the hotel from the resident ducks and moorhens to endangered red squirrels. For those lucky enough, there are also sightings of deer on the path to the lake.

Why not pamper yourself at Oxley’s, our partner health spa, with state of the art facilities including an indoor heated swimming pool, gym, spa and sauna. Oxley’s is totally free for guests staying in the hotel. Children under 16 are not permitted to use Oxley’s Health Spa.

Our Derwent Bar is always popular, with its open fire in the lounge in winter, it’s a great way to end the day.

You can also bring your dog to The Derwentwater Hotel (a small supplement does apply).

Location

Surely one of the most photographed lakes in the UK

By Car

Leave the M6 Motorway at junction 40, Penrith.  Pick up the A66 and follow signs for Keswick and Cockermouth.  After approximately 15 miles you will come upon direction signs for Keswick (disregard all three turnings) and continue on the A66 for Cockermouth.  After approximately 150 yards after the last direction sign to Keswick, a left turning is signposted for Portinscale and Grange.  Take this turnoff over a small stone bridge and past the Farmer Arms on the left.  Carry on through the village until the road bears sharply right.  Turn left on the bend in following the brown direction signs for the Derwentwater hotel and Derwent Manor and we are a further 50 yards on the right

We have parking for about 30 cars

Our postcode for Sat Nav users is  CA12 5RE

By Train

Aspatria is local station to the hotel. A taxi to the hotel from the station should be around £30.

By Air

Black Pool is the nearest airport, 57 miles away but Manchester is better if you are going to hire a car. The airport is 95 miles away and car hire is available through all the big national companies.

Local Attractions

Lake Derwent, at three miles long, one mile wide and 72 feet deep, is fed by the River Derwent catchment area in the high fells at the head of Borrowdale, and has a long historical and literary background. There are four islands, all owned by the National Trust, as is much of the shoreline. The most popular way to enjoy the beauty of the lake, other than by walking the paths around its shores, is to board one of the motor launches which operate round the lake.

Local Insight

The things everyone takes away from a break with us are the relaxing atmosphere, the scenery and the peace. If you want to chill out, come and visit us, we have the remedy. Walk down our path through the wetlands to the lake, it will take you 5 minutes, then sit on a bench and take in the view!

If you can drag yourself away from the hotel, Keswick is a short walk away or why not take a boat across the lake. Bird watchers can view one of this country’s most beautiful birds, the osprey, 10 minutes from the hotel, close to Whinlatter Forest Park.

  • Wordsworth House and Gardens
Step back to the 1770s and experience life as William and his sister Dorothy might have done. Meet and talk to the household staff as you explore this award-winning property. Many of the rooms are there for you to enjoy as if you were a guest of the Wordsworth family – there are even toys for the children to play with and books to read. The maid will show you the Georgian kitchen and you can enjoy tastings of recipes popular at the time (18th-century Cumberland food is cooked in the kitchen daily). You may meet the clerk in the office used by William's father and test your writing skill with quill pen and ink; you may also hear music from the harpsichord drifting through the house. William loved his home, and refers to the views and the River Derwent in his poem The Prelude. The peaceful walled garden contains flowers, fruit, herbs and vegetables of the period – all of which are used in the house. The Discovery Room has interactive touch screens and fascinating research material. For a preview go to www.wordsworthhouse.org.uk then come and visit us in person.

The herb garden is nationally renowned – with 250 medicinal and culinary herbs – and the orchards are packed with traditional fruit varieties. Wander along the Crowdundle Beck to the partially restored watermill, then enjoy the magnificent backdrop of the rose-pink sandstone house (which, although not open to the public, adds to the wonderful setting). Taste local produce at the tea-room or stay a while longer in a holiday cottage.

  • Hutton in the Forest
Hutton is surrounded by beautiful gardens and grounds. It is known that there were elaborate gardens around the house from the late 17th century. They have evolved since that time but the basic elements can still be seen and are a wonderful background to the plants and flowers.

2 Day Walking Break

Room 258: Tired! Needs attention. Reported that telephone did not work but it was not fixed. Breakfast and Evening meals were very good but please explain why Oasis music is played during dinner!!!?? It is not dinner music!! You need relaxing background music that does not interfere with conversation and relaxation. I asked for the music to be changed and turned down but nothing happened. Same for the lounge after dinner. Is a loud guitar vocalist really necessary?? Other than that hotel was ok.

Weekend Break

The hotel staff are lovely but the manager only spoke to us when out of uniform. The room we had was tired and cobwebs everywhere also the skirting boards where very dirty. The bathroom could do with updating. Bed creaked all night. We had to pay extra because there was only the room with view of lake but we could only see roof tops and a little bit of the lake. Surrounding areas are beautiful and it was lovely and peaceful. Keswick town was just a short walk and that was great. might go back!!!!

Most enjoyable Stay

We have just stayed at the Derwentwater  Hotel , I can only say it was excellent from start to finish ,the room we were allocated was the Ruskin Suite which was really comfortable, the food and friendliness of all staff was first class, the bar/conservatory is a very comfortable and relaxing area to unwind after a day’s walking and eating a fine meal and bottle of wine. The only down point we found was the small TV in the bedroom (minor point). We shall defiantly stay again.

Peaceful stay at the Derwentwater Hotel

We had a lovely stay at the Derwentwater Hotel, very peaceful, set in lovely surroundings with some nice walks to do during the day, but disappointing as there was not a lot to do in the evening we would have loved to walk in to Keswick on an evening but the path was unlit so this was not possible. We had a very restful time the staff were very friendly and the food was lovely.

Wonderful Holiday

What a beautiful Hotel with wonderful surroundings. The staff were excellent especially in the lovely dining room. All the food was superb. We could not believe the quality for what we had paid for the holiday. It was so restful when we sat in the lounge and also the entertainment was delightful. We are certainly going to come back for another holiday at The Derwentwater Hotel.

Winter Break

Just returned from a very enjoyable 4 night mid week stay at The Derwentwater Hotel. The special offer rate made it incredible value for money. The after dinner free drinks were very much appreciated. Everything about the hotel was of an excellent standard, with well trained staff eager to please. Our nice warm room had a lovely lake view with comfy bed and plenty of hot water. With the grounds to walk in and the conservatory to sit in there is really no need to go anywhere else. Sunshine too!

Derwentwater Hotel, Keswick

The All Inclusive deal is excellent value for money. The hotel is in a lovely location and just a short walk along a pleasant footpath to Keswick town centre. All the staff were polite and very efficient and clearly well trained. The food was good and the ‘live’ entertainment on a couple of nights was excellent. The room was adequate and very clean and certainly for the money was good value. The conservatory is huge and very pleasant to sit in during both the day and the evening.
