A warm welcome to The George Hotel...

Set in a beautiful river front location, five miles from the market town of Hexham. The George Hotel at Chollerford is a historic building dating back to the 1700’s, renowned for its fine food and warm hospitality.

It is great to have such a history behind the hotel and we work hard to keep the tradition going. We have also invested in the hotel by upgrading a number of facilities including the leisure club, with its swimming pool and gym. The front entrance and reception have been improved and the lounge bar now has traditional furniture and a baby grand piano. The restaurant has been redecorated to complement the views across the river. Situated west of Newcastle, we are an ideal spot for walkers, history buffs and gardeners.

The hotel is a perfect retreat in a location that we consider to be one of the most relaxing in Northumbria.

Local Insight

Our location is just stunning and everyday when I arrive the river next to us is different. It changes not just with the seasons but every day – sitting in our gardens and taking in the view is a pleasure in itself but we have even more to offer.

A lot of our guests come to walk Hadrian’s Wall and Hexham, a small, historic, and beautiful market town, its well worth exploring - it is also home to Britain’s first prison! Chester’s roman fort is also very interesting. Game fishing is extremely popular on this stretch of the river, with permits available at the hotel, and Northumberland National Park is situated just five miles to the west.

  • Hadrian’s Wall
  • Britain’s greatest Roman monument, Hadrian’s Wall World Heritage Site runs for 150 miles from Arbeia at South Shields to Ravenglass on the Cumbrian coast. There were once over 30 forts on the Roman frontier, including the original 16 on the line of the Wall, along with Milecastles, turrets, a ditch to the north and great Vallum earthwork to the south. Today you can visit a string of amazing forts and museums that stretch across the north of England, with the Wall itself visible at some major sites (such as Birdoswald) and at many other places in-between.

  • Northumberland National Park
  • You will glimpse wilderness and open landscapes that stir up a deep sense of the past. It is a place where you will find peace and quiet and escape the stresses and strains of modern life - or you will find adventure! It's up to you. Walkers can savour the silence and the beauty of the open fell, stroll through wild forests, or wander alongside peaceful waters. Horse Riders have the chance of tackling rides across wild and challenging moorland, to discover hidden valleys and the sense of true freedom. For cyclists you can enjoy the open countryside or quiet open roads, passing through picturesque villages such as Elsdon, Falstone, Greenhaugh, and Alwinton.
  • Chesters Walled Garden
  • Chesters Walled Garden is a 2-acre 18th Century garden, surrounded on three sides by sheltering woods of beech and yew, and open to the south with views over the lovely Tyne valley. The garden has one of the largest collections of herbs in Britain. There are medicinal and dye plants, culinary and aromatic herbs, knot gardens and old fashioned roses. Open all year with various opening times according to season.

  • Beamish Museum
  • Beamish is a world famous open air museum. Telling the story of life in North East England in Georgian, Victorian and Edwardian times.  Beamish stands in 300 acres of beautiful County Durham countryside.  Most of the houses, shops and other buildings you see here have been brought to Beamish, rebuilt and furnished as they once were.  Some, such as Home Farm, Pockerley Old Hall and the drift mine were here already. You won't find objects displayed in glass cases at Beamish, you'll see them in their original context.  What's more, you can meet the costumed staff who are proud of their heritage and happy to share their knowledge with visitors.

  • Kielder Water and Forest park
