Our hotel in Northumberland, The George, is located in Hexham. This small, historic settlement was named England’s favourite market town in Country Life magazine. When you visit you’ll soon see why...
Looking for the ideal base from which to explore the best of North East England? Our hotel in Northumberland, The George, is the perfect fit. The George dates back to the 1700s and is located in a beautiful setting on the banks of the North Tyne River. Fancy a spot of fishing? Why not! The North Tyne is famous for salmon and is the best salmon fishing river in England. So what else does a trip to England’s most northern county have in store?
There are two things that Hexham and the surrounding area are extremely good for: history and countryside. Visit the world famous Hadrian’s Wall and you’ll get the best of both. This astonishing Roman defensive wall, which spans the width of England, dates back to AD 122. It’s regarded as the most important monument built by the Romans in Britain and is the most popular tourist attraction in Northern England. This is your chance to see it for yourself; to walk by the stones that were laid by Roman hands nearly 2,000 years ago. That’s pretty special.
Another popular tourist attraction for lovers of the great outdoors is Kielder Water and Forest Park. It covers some 250 square miles and is home to the largest manmade lake in Northern Europe. If you’re a fan of absorbing spectacular countryside vistas while enjoying a ramble or cycle ride then you’ll simply love it. Get out there!
Fan of peering into yesteryear? Of course you are! There’s no better place for gaining an insight into how the people of North East England lived during the Georgian, Victorian and Edwardian eras than Beamish Museum. It’s fascinating stuff. And so is the beautiful Hexham Abbey, which retains much of its architecture from the original building dating back to the year 675. It’s absolutely breathtaking inside and well worth a look. Then there’s the 14th century Hexham Old Gaol - the oldest purpose-built prison in England. History is everywhere!
Yet while Hexham might be historically rich, it’s certainly not a town living in the past. You’ll find plenty of great bars and restaurants where you can enjoy a refreshing drink or a delicious evening meal. What better way to digest your day of adventure and toast your holiday?
