The Golden Lion Hotel, Hunstanton

Norfolk

There is much to love about Norfolk. From your Hotel in Norfolk, The Golden Lion at Hunstanton, it’s easy to discover stately homes, steam railways and stunning waterways. The ever changing coast may not have high cliffs but that makes it perfect for walkers and families. Inland there are churches, magnificent buildings and, of course, Norwich Cathedral, a thousand year old treasure in Norfolk’s first and only city.

Norfolk is a beautiful, low-lying county, with much land ‘reclaimed’ from the sea or shaped by man.  But don’t think that means you won’t see wildlife! Far from it!

The Fens are an important area that was once marshland. Today the area offers an opportunity to explore peaceful waterways, see an amazing array of wetland birds at the Wash or visit Fenland towns and markets with real Norfolk character.

The coast is easy to explore too. Walkers will pass salt marshes, coastal pine forests and long stretches of glorious sands. The beaches at Sheringham, Cromer, Sea Palling, Mundesley and Hunstanton have been awarded Blue Flags for their water quality, access and facilities. Holkham, another fabulous beach, is also home to brightly coloured beach huts, whilst Cromer and Great Yarmouth offer their own uniquely English brand of end of the pier fun.

The Norfolk Broads – one of the main reasons thousands of people flock to Norfolk every year - is now the UK's largest nationally protected wetland and is an area that’s important for wildlife. Twitchers, sailors and walkers love the paths and waterways that pass by villages, market towns and, of course, waterside pubs.

Norfolk has its fair share of ancient sites, ruined abbeys, magnificent churches and stately homes too. Sandringham, The Queen's country residence, may have sixty acres of gardens, lawns and lakes, dells and glades but it’s the house most people come to see. It’s the same at Holkham Hall, Blickling Hall and Houghton Hall. Among the treasures you’ll also find beautiful relics from an industrial past, the windmills. You can visit working examples at Bircham and Stow.

Finally, there is one way to see Norfolk that will please all nostalgia lovers. And that is to let the train take the strain. The Mid-Norfolk Railway, Bure Valley Railway and The North Norfolk Railway (also known as the Poppy Line) will take you to the heart of the county through stunning countryside and lovely towns and villages.
