Local Insight

Scarborough has lots to offer. The South Beach has all the fish and chip shops, arcades and traditional seaside things you might expect. The north beach is a very different environment with beautiful walks, a lovely beach, no shops and an old castle sandwiched in the middle. Further inland, North Yorkshire is an often overlooked gem of a county offering beautiful scenery and countless attractions both historic and modern.

So when it comes to Scarborough, think of us as having it all!

  • Nunnington Hall
The sheltered walled garden, with spring-flowering organic meadows, orchards and flamboyant peacocks. Nestled on the quiet banks of the River Rye. Take the afternoon to enjoy and absorb the atmosphere of this former family home. Explore period rooms while hearing the Hall's many tales, and then discover one of the world's finest collections of miniature rooms in the attic. The Hall also holds a series of important art and photography exhibitions during the year. Why not make a day of it? Its close proximity to Rievaulx Terrace makes it an ideal afternoon visit after a walk at Rievaulx Terrace in the morning.

  • Rievaulx Terrace and Temples
Discover one of Ryedale's true gems – the 18th-century landscape of Rievaulx Terrace. Stroll through woods then out on to the grass terrace, with its stunning views down over the Cistercian ruin of Rievaulx Abbey. In spring the bank between the temples is awash with wild flowers, in summer the lawns are the perfect spot for a picnic, while in autumn the beech woods are a mass of rich hues. Step back into the 18th century as you gaze up at the wonderful painted ceiling of the Ionic Temple. Being so close to Nunnington Hall, the Terrace makes an ideal morning visit before discovering Nunnington in the afternoon.

  • Mount Grace Priory
This is England's most important Carthusian ruin. The individual cells reflect the hermit-like isolation of the monks, a reconstruction enables visitors to see the austere and simple furnishings. There is a small herb garden.

  • Treasurer's House
Originally home to the treasurers of York Minster and built over a Roman road, the house is not all that it seems. Nestled behind the Minster, its size, splendour and contents are a constant surprise to visitors – as are the famous ghost stories. The house was carefully restored between 1897 and 1930 by one remarkable man, wealthy local industrialist Frank Green, with thirteen rooms presented in a variety of historic styles. Outside is an attractive formal sunken garden and herb and produce garden.

A Great Five Days

My wife and I have just returned from the New Southlands after a five day first visit. We were very impressed by the accommodation (a standard room), good food and great service. The location is out of town but everything is very accessible by bus and on foot. We enjoyed out stay and would gladly recommend it and return again ourselves.

Four Day Break at Scarborough

We stayed for four nights in March with a couple of friends. We received a very warm welcome. The room was a superior room (just as it said) with everything on hand. Well equipped with everything you would ever need. The food and staff in the restaurant were second to none. The porridge wasn't up to the Scottish Shearings standard!! Everything else was first class. Staff were warm and friendly and very helpful. A lovely relaxing break and will go again.

Great base for a Holiday

We enjoyed a lovely 4 night stay with family. With myself and my partner been both in the Hospitality industry we are sometimes hard to please, but the restaurant & bar staff were excellent. Hotel room was basic but clean and tidy only complaint was that the room was a little cold when we entered in the evening but we weren't cold during the night at all. Great Base for sighting in Scarborough & Surrounding areas! I am sure we will be back.

Mixed time in New Southlands

Food here rivals the lakes and lounge areas superb. Recently widowed -single rooms are cupboards and not overly clean. Assistant manager moved friend and I to better room on last night-what a shame we weren't there in the first place. Told we could upgrade easily on arrival-not so-beware single travellers. One receptionist very unhelpful. Spoiled a restful break. Total credit to Eddie and team in the restaurant for giving me a reason to visit again-without the catering staff I wouldn't consider it.
