A warm welcome to The Golden Lion Hotel...

The hotel is like an icon in the town with its high profile location, next to the town hall, overlooking the green and the sea. Built in 1846, the hotel was the very first building in the town. Whilst it has been added to and recently modernised, it still holds on to its old world charm.

Recent refurbishment has given us a beautiful dining room and lovely bedrooms, including Premier rooms overlooking the sea. The “Lion Inn” public bar still attracts locals as well as guests giving it a really vibrant feel whilst those wanting a quiet spot can still find solitude in the residents’ bar.

The views across the green and The Wash are stunning and a real feature for us.

Local Insight

Norfolk is an undiscovered gem – we have no motorways in the county! Having lived here all my life I love the relaxed atmosphere, the beaches and the countryside. The Royal Household at Sandringham, 10 minutes from the hotel, its worth a visit for both the house and beautiful gardens. Along with Sandringham, we also have Holkham Hall, the Princess Theatre, our beautiful beaches and much, much more.

Pay us a visit and we’ll be happy to help you choose the right places to visit.

  • Elton Hall
Very little evidence remains of the original garden. Formal gardens and pleasure grounds were laid out in the 1890s and all that remains from this early planting are some of the mature trees, the box parterre and the four conical yew shapes to the south of the hall. The garden you see today was laid out in 1913 with the construction of the paths, the lawns, the lily pond, the well-head and the flower garden wall. By 1980 a large part of the Edwardian garden had fallen into disrepair and since the early 1980s there has been a major restoration programme. The flower garden has been replanted and a new sunken garden, a shrub garden and an arboretum created. The Gothic orangery was built to celebrate the millennium and a Gothic arbour was completed to mark the Jubilee celebrations.

  • Grimsthorpe Castle
Grimsthorpe Park was the southern edge of the great Lincolnshire forest. Some of these ancient trees were still growing here in the 20th century. Oaks were felled during the Tudor period for ship building and again during Cromwell's ten year commonwealth. The oak trees you see today were planted after the restoration of the Stuart Monarchy, the straight ridings through the trees creating a formal park.

  • Houghton Hall
The Houghton gardens received the “Garden of the Year Award” from Christies and the Historic Houses Association in recognition of the renovation of the five acre walled garden which began in 1991. The former kitchen garden had fallen into a state of disrepair and Lord Cholmondeley was keen to restore it as a memorial to his grandmother. An area for productive kitchen garden has been retained, the large part of the garden has been laid out as a series of ‘ornamental gardens’ in various styles.

Sandringham House is set in 60 acres of glorious gardens, perhaps the finest of all the royal gardens. Every generation of the royal family which has lived here has added something of their own times and tastes, from the peace of the woodland walks to the drama of the carrstone rockeries, from the formality of the North Garden with its pleached lime avenues to the intimacy of the Stream Walk.

Built c.1722, this is one of England's finest town houses with superb rococo plaster and wood decorations. Outside, discover the hidden wonders of the 0.8 hectares (two acres) of beautiful Victorian garden, with its orangery, summerhouse, roses and manicured croquet lawn, as well as a 17th-century thatched barn and Georgian stables. As well as early Mortlake tapestries in the Queen's Room, Oxburgh houses beautiful embroidered hangings by Mary, Queen of Scots, and Bess of Hardwick. Panoramic views from the roof look out over the Victorian French parterre, walled orchard, kitchen garden and a Catholic chapel. My stay at The Golden Lion Hotel

My stay in Hunstanton in August 2010 for 5 days/4 night, was extra special due to the welcoming of this hotel. Everything about our stay was excellent, lovely, friendly staff and very good varied menus for dinner. Good Bus Service (CoastHopper) taking you right up to Cromer and back (passing Wells by the Sea, Burnham Market, Cley, Sherringham etc). My Mum and I had an enjoyable and active week. Great value for money. Lots of local places of interest to visit i.e. Sandringham House. Thank You!

My week-end break at The Golden Lion

Having just spent a relaxing 3 day break with my wife. The hotel is in an excellent location with lovely views of the sea and promenade. The dining room overlooks the sea and is on the small side which I liked. The downside is that the evening meal has to be split into several sittings. The food was good and in line with the value-for-money cost of the week-end break. The staff were pleasant and helpful as one expects. I would definitely recommend it for a nice quiet break by the sea.

Hunstanton

Very nice hotel in a good location. Enjoyed the walks in the local area - found some nice shops nearby. Good base for visiting Sandringham and the coastal towns of Cromer and Sheringham. Mostly friendly staff - a few could do with a few lessons in customer relations!! But a very enjoyable stay.

Fantastic

This was the first time we have stayed at this hotel, and we were very happy with everything. There were four of us in the party and we had a great 3 days. The food was absolutely superb and our waitress could not do enough for us, tending to our every need in a cheerful and friendly way. The two men on reception, Craig and Michael were always friendly and welcoming, they both have a knack of making their guests feel special. We can't wait to go back there and thanks for our great weekend!

An Absolutely Great Hotel

We came with two friends to celebrate our Ruby Anniversary. We could not have hoped to stay at a hotel of such a standard at such a remarkable price. The rooms were very nice, clean, well equipped and with a very nice bathroom. The staff were very warm and naturally friendly, it was as if nothing was too much trouble. We found the food to be of excellent quality with extensive choice including a good vegetarian option if you are so inclined the service both in the restaurant and bar was superb.
