It’s easy to find the very best of the west. You might just need to stay a little bit longer to see everything. Where first? The magical other worldliness of Eden? The mysteries of the Lost Gardens of Heligan? Serene south coast beaches or surf mad sands on the northern shores? But don’t forget that there’s more, much more, to staying in Devon and Cornwall than Cornish pasties and Devon cream teas. Mind you, they are to die for...
Think of Devon and Cornwall and you’ll probably think first of hedgerows bursting with life, Cornish coves with white sands and dreamy blue seas and, naturally, the humble cream tea. In Devon tradition has it that you put the clotted cream on your scone first, whilst over the border they wouldn’t think of doing anything but spreading the jam first. Both, needless to say, are delicious.
Stopping somewhere nice for afternoon tea is an important part of exploring from our Hotels in Devon and Cornwall but it isn’t everything. The region is one of the UK’s most popular tourist destinations for many reasons besides its wonderful food, although it’s great to lose yourself with a long lunch at Rick Stein’s in Padstow, Jamie Oliver’s 15 Cornwall at Watergate Bay or Michael Caines’ Gidela Park near Chagford.
Away from the celebrity dining it’s the coast and country that are the true stars of Devon and Cornwall. From the rolling hills of Ruby Country in mid Devon and the rivers of Tarka Country in North Devon to the dramatic granites of the Exmoor National Park, Dartmoor National Park and Bodmin Moor – and the strands, coves, inlets and estuaries of the coast – there is a glittering array of vistas to enjoy, especially on sunny summer days. How you do it is up to you.
The South West Coast Path will reveal every single nook and cranny along every one of its 630 coastal miles but you’ll get a different view if you take the train. The Brunel-built mainline between the region’s two great cities, Plymouth and Exeter, is spectacular. It’s not far from The Imperial Hotel, Exmouth either. Then again, take the branch line to Falmouth en route to The Ship and Castle at St Mawes, one of our Hotels in Devon and Cornwall, and you’ll see more of Cornwall’s amazing beauty than you ever could if you took the car. And you’ll get to take a ferry across the very beautiful Fal Estuary in the process!
Once you reach the far west you’ll find that it’s not as wild as you might have imagined. The Eden Project is a spectacular, world beating attraction that’s different every time you visit. Anyone who’s anyone will find something to love about it. Theatre lovers will find another kind of paradise with a performance at The Minnack Theatre, a unique cliff side stage that has nothing but the Atlantic as its back drop. Again, it’s truly spectacular. The Tate at St Ives is another place to wonder at the works of man and nature. The gallery is lovely and the setting is incredible. They say artists came here because of the light. It’s piercing. And if it doesn’t touch your heart with love for Cornish skies, ask for your money back (we guarantee you won’t).
Devon is a great place to take in lungfuls of clean, cool sea air too. Exmouth and the south coast are famed for their sailing and fishing whilst in the north, Atlantic rollers give delight to surfers of all ages. Take a deep breath and give it a go. You won’t be disappointed.
