Originally called the Riggs Windermere Hotel, named after Thomas Rigg who built it in 1847, the hotel opened at the same time as the railway from Oxenholme to Windermere. The hotel name has changed but the hotel and railway station remain and greet most visitors on their way to Windermere. A recent refurbishment of the bar and restaurant has left us a really warm modern look that returning guests love, but the hotel still retains a lovely old feel, true to it’s railway heritage.
Our location set high above the town of Windermere gives us beautiful views over the lake, a stunning setting. Guests can stroll into the town and for the more energetic the lake itself is just a 20 minute walk.
For a special occasion our Premier rooms with views across to the lake are a must!

The Windermere Hotel is perched on the edge of Windermere, just 15 miles from junction 36 of the M6.
Windermere is the largest lake in England - 10.5 miles long and 200 ft deep in places. The lake is classified as a public highway and in centuries past supported commercial traffic associated with slate and copper mining, timber, wool and fishing. Windermere is England's largest lake, in the heart of the Lake District.
I have never known a place where views change so much during the day sunshine and rain highlight the landscape so beautifully. Just a simple drive in the Lakes is a lovely experience and the same road in the other direction gives a totally different perspective and view – never a dull day out in the Lakes! Very often my days off are spent relaxing with a great walk.
My local’s “hot tip” would be walking to Miller Ground. It is a lovely walk that ends at the lake itself with beautiful views over to the hills on the other side. It’s also an easy walk to the pubs and restaurants in Windermere.

My hubby and I stayed at the Windermere Hotel in late April and were pleasantly surprised by the quality of the service, decor and food, for the cost of the break. ALL the staff were attentive and competent (apart from one bar tender who was quite rude to me on one occasion). The attention to detail impressed me and I really would have liked to stay for longer. The weather was lovely too. I am just thinking I may book for Bank holiday! Great hotel although it is a short trek to the Lake Windermere.

Just want to say thanks for a great holiday, your staff were lovely and very friendly, the meals were more than adequate, the rooms although tired looking were always clean. Thanks once again.

Last Friday my sister and I stayed at the Windermere Hotel for 2 nights. What a fantastic time we had. The staff couldn’t do enough for us, the food was superb, the rooms were pleasant and spotless clean and the overall impression is a very positive one. Please convey our thanks to all concerned.

We liked the decor and the excellent staff - polite, friendly, helpful - just what we needed. The historic notes in the room pack gave added value and interest. Unfortunately my wife was unable to view the impressive restored Victorian urinals, an unexpected feature.
